RIGA - Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers) sees 2024 as a dynamic year.

Mierina told LETA that the past year had been spent thinking about strengthening the country's security and defense capabilities.

This year, the Saeima approved 318 bills, which is slightly less than last year. The Speaker of the Saeima stressed that a number of bills of public importance had been considered, including an extensive debate on the implementation and financing of the Rail Baltica project.

Mierina noted that this year work had been done to promote transparency and openness in the work of the Saeima, with a number of new traditions being established.

In order to strengthen the Parliament's links with civil society, the Saeima, together with representatives of non-governmental organizations, launched the organization of open days of Saeima committees. The first open day of a committee took place on February 27, the International Day of Non-Governmental Organizations, the Speaker said.

This year, for the first time, the Saeima also held an economic debate. Ministers and more than 40 MPs took to the podium to discuss the country's future economic development, Mierina said.
