RIGA - The Saeima on Thursday ratified Latvia's agreements with Lithuania and Estonia on solidarity measures to ensure the security of gas supply.

The government approved the respective bills already a year ago, but the agreement were still in the process of signing at that time.

Latvia's former economics minister Janis Vitenbergs (National Alliance) said a year ago that these agreements will further strengthen regional energy cooperation among the three Baltic states, as under the agreement the countries commit to "providing mutual support in the event of crisis".

The agreements are necessary to transpose the European Union's (EU) regulation obliging EU member states that have gas connections with neighboring countries to take solidarity measures if a neighbor country runs out of gas stocks.
