Rinkevics to meet with new UN secretary general during his visit to US

RIGA - Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Unity) will head to the US today where he will meet with new UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, according to information published n Latvijas Vestnesis official gazette.

The minister is also expected to speak at the UN Security Council debate on Syria, and then he will go to Lithuania.

The Latvian Foreign Ministry informed that the UN Security Council debate on prevention of conflicts and peacekeeping is organized by Sweden.

The minister during the debate will present Latvia’s view on the role of the UN in ensuring international peace, including in Syria and Ukraine.

During the visit, Rinkevics plans to participate in the lunch organized by the Swedish foreign minister. The minister is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with other ministers, including the foreign minister of Kazakhstan.

Rinkevics will stay in the US until January 11 and will be in Lithuania until January 13. In Lithuania, he will participate in the Snow Meeting, a meeting of foreign and security policy experts.
