RIGA - Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics after the first political consultations with parties has resolved to still try to achieve a broader coalition, therefore he will invite five political forces to further negotiations.
In a statement to the press, Rinkevics said that during these consultations, five political groups represented in the current Saeima (the New Unity, the Union of Greens and Farmers, the United List, the National Alliance, and the Progressives) expressed their overall support for national development priorities and list of immediate interventions identified by the president.
"Given the political stance and previous parliamentary track record of these political parties, I am certain that the new cabinet must be built upon the broadest possible majority support of the parliament. Such government composition would be most suitable and capable of delivering on a number of specific issues important for the society of Latvia. On top of medium and long-term priorities identified by me, the new government should also start working on the 2024 budget as soon as it is ready," the president said.
The president has therefore invited representatives of the five parties to the Riga Castle tomorrow, August 23 for further discussions.
