RIGA - Above all, the unity of our people and faith in Latvia must be strengthened, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics said today at the military parade dedicated to the 105th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia.

He expressed confidence that joint determination will deter those who do not wish good for Latvia. "Today's parade is another proof of our capabilities. But above all, we must strengthen the unity of our people and our faith in Latvia. This is our greatest strength! Because there are no things we cannot solve. There are no obstacles that we cannot overcome. We are united and our will is strong," said the resident.

In his speech, he mentioned Corporal Vitalijs Smirnovs, who fell sacrificing himself for the victory of Ukraine.

"Vitalijs gave his life not only for Ukraine, but also for free Latvia and Europe. His fight has not been in vain. We will keep Vitalijs in our memory. We will continue to defend our freedom and the freedom of our friends," the president stressed.

He thanked the Latvian soldiers who are training the Ukrainian troops, and he especially saluted the border guards, servicemen and soldiers who stand guard on the country's eastern border, protecting Latvia and the European Union on a daily basis.

The president of Latvia congratulated Latvian soldiers in Kosovo and Iraq, as well as Latvian border guards and police officers in other distant places.

"Latvia is not alone in facing security challenges. We have allies and friends. We have NATO - 31 countries with shared values. The presence of our allied troops here in Latvia is a practical and daily reminder of the NATO pledge. Thank you for your support and shoulder," Rinkevics said.
