RIGA - If the government and the parliament support the initiative on dissolution of the Riga City Council, the extraordinary elections might be held in early March, according to the information at the disposal of LETA.

If the Saeima does not manage to revise the issue this week, the decision might be made in the first half of January.

Support to the coalition lawmakers to the dissolution of the Riga City Council is still unclear.

According to the bill submitted to the government by the Environment Protection and Regional Development Ministry, the extraordinary elections of the Riga City Council should take place on first Saturday two months from the law on dissolution took force.

The government will discuss the bill on December 17, but it still has to be approved by the parliament.

Earlier, February 29 was named as the possible data of the elections.

As reported, the Environment Protection and Regional Development Ministry has decided to initiate dissolution of the Riga City Council because the local authority has repeatedly failed to fulfill one of its functions - to ensure waste management services.
