RIGA - Finance Minister Janis Reirs (New Unity) has launched a disciplinary care and suspended State Revenue Service (VID) general director Ieva Jaunzeme from her position, LETA learned from the Finance Ministry.
The decree has been issued both on the basis of the service review report and in response to the recent detentions of the Corruption Prevention Bureau (KNAB) in the VID Customs and Finance Police, as well as the detention of several employees by the VID Internal Security Board.
Reirs said that an criminal organized group has been detained, consisting of high-ranking VID officials. The detained persons who have been arrested are not low-ranking inspectors or a customs official, but high-ranking officials, working directly under the managing director, who in turn reports directly to the director general.
Reirs has also asked to decide on responsibility and suspension of the director of the VID Tax and Customs Police Board, Kaspars Podins, for the period of investigation.
"The crimes for which these officials have been detained are also the most serious ones that an official can commit. In such a situation, it is unthinkable that an institution could pretend that nothing has happened and continue to work further,” said Reirs.
The actions by Jaunzeme classify as unjustified failure to perform duties, a specific order or task, or delayed, negligent or poor performance. This may have caused significant damage to the interests of the state.
Reirs believes that the crimes could have been committed only because there are problems with internal control mechanisms and supervision.
Deputy Director General Indra Karklina has been appointed acting director general.
