TALLINN - Rat poison has been detected in HiPP baby food across Europe. According to preliminary information, the issue is not a manufacturing defect but rather intentional tampering, likely at the retail level.

Consumers are urged to check the packaging and seals of products before use to ensure they are safe.

According to Triinu Allikas, Head of the Food Safety Department at the Agriculture and Food Board, there is no information to suggest that the potentially contaminated products have reached Estonia. "It is currently unknown whether the tampered products have entered the Estonian market. The Board is monitoring the situation and is prepared to react swiftly if necessary," Allikas stated.

Intentionally tampered products have been identified in several European countries. "Given that this food is intended for a vulnerable group, many countries have removed the products from sale and launched investigations. Estonian consumers should also be vigilant and make sure that product packaging has not been compromised," Allikas explained.

Recommendations for consumers: check that food packaging is intact and unopened; ensure the jar's lid and safety seal are not damaged; do not consume a product if its smell, appearance, or taste seems unusual; and if in doubt, do not consume it and return it to the place of purchase.

The Agriculture and Food Board stresses that vigilance is crucial in ensuring the safety of all food products.
