TALLINN - Estonian President Alar Karis met with President of the Republic of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu at Kadriorg Palace in Tallinn on Monday to discuss the international security situation and strengthening bilateral relations.
Both heads of state expressed their commitment to enhancing political cooperation, sharing expertise in digital governance, and working together within international organizations.
Karis emphasized Estonia's readiness to share its digital governance experience and support the Maldives in advancing digital innovation.
"Estonia and the Maldives may be small nations, but our cooperation holds great potential. Shared values such as respect for international law and the promotion of innovation provide us with a solid foundation for joint initiatives," he said.
Karis underscored the importance of cooperation in upholding international law.
"Russia's war in Ukraine impacts the entire world, including countries like the Maldives. The principles of international law and the UN Charter must remain steadfast," the Estonian president added. The leaders also discussed the situation in the Middle East.
The meeting highlighted the vital role of small nations in addressing climate issues.
"The Maldives' experiences in adapting to the impacts of climate change are truly inspiring. Estonia will continue supporting small island nations in dealing with the challenges of climate change," Karis said.
The Estonian head of state encouraged the Maldives to participate in the World Cleanup Day campaign, which provides people with an opportunity to contribute to environmental protection. The leaders also exchanged views on diversifying energy sources in both Estonia and the Maldives.
After the meeting, the two presidents visited the Memorial to the Victims of Communism at Maarjamäe.
