TALLINN – The non-profit organization Päästame Eesti Metsad (Save Estonia's Forests) is organizing a conference and cultural event in Kuressaare in mid-November called "Metsa mõte" (The Idea of the Forest), focusing on the preservation and use of forests.

The conference aims to bring together science, forestry practices, culture, and local experience to gain knowledge and clarity on how to better preserve and utilize forests.

"We will look back at the history of Estonian forestry and culture to find valuable wisdom for today. We will assess the current state of our forests and forestry practices and look creatively towards the future—in scientific, cultural, and experiential contexts," said Leo Filippov, one of the conference organizers.

The first state forest management plan was implemented on the Sõrve peninsula in Saaremaa 230 years ago, in 1795, which is one of the reasons the conference is being held in November and specifically on Saaremaa. Farištamo Eller, another of the conference's organizers, also describes the forests of Saaremaa as highly diverse and species-rich.

The organizers welcome anyone with a keen interest in forests and forestry who wishes to contribute to the discussion.

In addition to the conference, the week's events in November will include several other activities. Attendees can explore various exhibitions and forestry publications, enjoy the "Metsalaul" (Forest Song) concert, or participate in a nature hike.

The conference will take place on November 13 at the Kuressaare Cultural Centre.
