VILNIUS – Lithuania's Radiation Protection Center reported a possible incident at the Astravyets nuclear power plant in Belarus on Sunday but noted that the radiation background in Lithuania remains unchanged.

"We would like to inform you that in the Belarusian media appeared information about possible incident at the Belarus nuclear power plant. It is said that this incident could be related to a reactor cooling system failure," the center said.

It also added that the Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) has information from responsible Belarusian authorities on the safety situation at the nuclear power plant.

No official information has been received from responsible authorities in Belarus yet.

No changes of radiation background in Lithuania have been recorded, the center said.
