RIGA - The State Police has seized 51 kilograms of marijuana worth half a million euros in the basement of a private house in Jaunmarupe, the State Police inform LETA.
Police received information about drug smuggling from foreign countries with trucks into Latvia. During long-term operational and criminal procedural activities, law enforcement officers obtained information about the person involved in this scheme.
Last week, on September 13, police arrested a Latvian national born in 1976, who could be connected to a criminal group from abroad, most likely from Spain, for illegal narcotics trafficking in Riga.
The information at the disposal of the police shows that this person, who has a criminal record, has been engaged in illegal drug trade for a long period of time.
On the same day, police in Jaunmarupe, Marupe county, searched a private house connected to the arrested man, in the basement of which they found about 51 kilograms of marijuana, which was divided into one kilogram packages.
The marijuana was most likely brought in from Spain and was intended for the market of the Baltic countries, including for sale in Latvia.
A Maserati automobile worth approximately EUR 50,000 was confiscated from the suspect, which was most likely purchases with proceeds from the sale of illegal narcotics.
The man has been remanded in custody.
After the procedural steps are taken, the seized marijuana will be destroyed.
An active investigation continues in the criminal proceedings and other involved persons are also being identified.
If convicted for such a crime, the Latvian criminal code foresees a prison sentence of between five to 15 years, with or without confiscation of property, and with probation for a period of up to three years.
