TALLINN - The foreign affairs committee of the Estonian parliament has been given an overview of Estonia's Africa strategy for 2020-2030, which is currently being drafted.
The strategy was introduced to the committee by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who said that the strategy focuses on political, economic and development-related dimensions and supports Estonia's activities in Africa, the Riigikogu wrote on social media.
The strategy seeks to chart Estonia's cooperation with various African states thus far and set concrete objectives and activities for the coming years.
The foreign affairs committee of the parliament commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for strategically mapping out Africa as a region.
Members of the committee underscored that climate will be the most important factor in the region in addition to demographics over the coming years, and that Estonia needs to take this into consideration when setting its objectives. Topics discussed also included EU trade barriers and development aid.
The committee expressed hope that the Africa strategy will soon also be followed by a strategy for Asia.
The need for strategies for the purpose of specifying cooperation and Estonia's interests in states and regions important for Estonia has also been highlighted in the recently approved foreign policy development plant. Africa has been deemed as a strategically important region in this document, which calls for greater focus on development cooperation and ensuring representation for Estonia.
