VILNIUS - Viktoras Pranckietis, the speaker of the parliament, will represent Lithuania in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw, the president's office said on Monday.

President Gitanas Nauseda has informed his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, in a letter that he will not be able to attend the event "due to the changes in his agenda", it said in a press release.

"Commemoration of the Battle of Warsaw is highly important in the context of our daily challenges, when we still have to defend territorial integrity and statehood of countries, to fight not only for the preservation of democracy and human rights but against the distortion of history and disinformation," the Lithuanian president said in his letter.

Poland's victory in the 1920 Battle of Warsaw, also known as the Miracle of the Vistula, halted the Red Army’s expansion to the West.
