The online museum of traditional art of Ukraine KROVETS krovets.ua is returning in an updated form after a six-year break. The family of collectors and founders of the project, Yevhen and Lyudmila Dmytruk, presented the new platform krovets.ua. Now it is in fact a whole ecosystem comprising: a classical online museum, an aggregator of traditional art collections and a photo bank of high-quality reproductions of exhibits. Such extended format significantly expands the possibilities for everyone interested in Ukrainian cultural heritage.

The platform KROVETS offers users unique access to over 3,800 digitized exhibits of Ukrainian traditional art. These relate to numerous samples of clothing, ceramics, embroidery and other household items that reflect the richness of Ukrainian culture. The online museum provides an opportunity to examine each item in detail, because each exhibit is illustrated by on average 20 detailed pictures depicting the item from all sides.

About the museum

It all started with a collection that the couple Yevhen and Lyudmila Dmytruk have been collecting for over 20 years. During this time, they have collected thousands of exhibits and by now have digitized most of them. This allows every traditional art lover to immerse themselves in the richness of Ukrainian culture.

“We aim to create not a closed club of snobs, but a responsible community, which would strive to collect, preserve, digitize, and publish various examples of traditional Ukrainian art that can still be saved,” say the founders of the project.

The first version of KROVETS appeared back in October 2014 at krovets.com.ua and for a long time was one of the most visited online platforms for the traditional art lovers community. But in 2019, the online museum suffered a fatal attack and temporarily suspended its work.

What's new in the restored online museum KROVETS?

Along with the relaunch, the platform has received significant updates that greatly expand its functionality and opportunities for visitors. These relate to:

Great illustrativeness - over 3,800 exhibits along with over 46 thousand of photoreproductions, which can also be downloaded for a fee. The exhibits can now be viewed in more detail from all angles, and some of them can even be seen from the inside out. This allows appreciating even the smallest details of exhibits and viewing the entire beauty and skill that often go unnoticed at offline exhibitions.

Active analytics - graphs and datatables to better understand the characteristics of Ukrainian traditional art. This outlines which features and techniques were dominant and which were secondary in each category and each region. By subscribing (7,5 to 30 USD/month), subscribers gain access to expanded features.

Classification of each category “by local styles” - outlines particular phenomena of local traditional art in different parts of Ukraine. Styles, techniques, and ornaments that are characteristic of specific regions are now clearly highlighted, allowing a better understanding of the cultural diversity of our country.

Aggregator of traditional art collections - opens new opportunities for private collection owners and small museums. They can now publish their own collections on the renewed online platform. Moreover, soon these will all get integrated with the EUROPEANA (Europe’s largest online archive of cultural heritage). This allows museums and private collectors to expand their audience and reach the international level.

Why KROVETS project is so important

Traditional art is one of the truest expressions of the artistic tastes of an entire nation, which makes it a valuable cultural asset for humanity and an inexhaustible source of inspiration. By clearly explaining: what our ancestors wore, how they decorated themselves, what things they surrounded themselves with, KROVETS, in fact, is a powerful tool for understanding what Ukrainian sense of beauty is.

“Our great ambitious goal is to digitize and publish all private and museum collections in order to create the most comprehensive online platform for exploring traditional art of Ukraine, so that its beauty could be seen and appreciated not only by Ukrainians, but also by the whole world,” note the founders of the museum, Yevhen and Lyudmila Dmytruky.

Thanks to the KROVETS platform, traditional Ukrainian art becomes accessible to everyone. From now on, everyone can immerse themselves in the world of Ukrainian culture, in order to find what Ukrainian sense of beauty is.
