RIGA - During a Baltic Assembly Security and Defense Committee meeting today, Foreign Ministry State Secretary Janis Garisons said that one of the main challenges in the Baltics in the coming years will be the maintenance and upkeep of military equipment.

He said that in case of military conflict, Latvia must be capable of repairing its military equipment on the spot, instead of sending them abroad.

Garisons said that it is easy to purchase a weapon, but it is considerably more difficult to include maintenance requirements in agreements.

Garisons believes that maintenance and upkeep of equipment will be one of the main challenges in the region as workshops, experts and other considerable investments will be necessary, which will be difficult for Latvia taking into account it does not have a military industry.
