Number of population shrinks in Latvia in 2016

RIGA - In early 2017, there were about 1,950,000 residents in Latvia, which is by 18,800 people fewer than a year ago, according to the Central Statistics Bureau data on changes in the number of Latvia's population in 2016.

In terms of regions, the number of the population has increased only in Riga – by 1,800 residents compared to a year ago. Latvia’s eastern Latgale region shows the biggest drop in the number of population - by 6,300 residents or 2.3 percent.

Among cities, the steepest drops in the population were recorded in Rezekne, Liepaja, Daugavpils, Ventspils, Jekabpils.

Only nine out of 110 counties showed an increase in the number of population, and most of them are in the Greater Riga region.
