Nokia and Tet lead the way to 20Gbs connectivity in Latvia

  • 2024-12-09

Today Nokia and Tet announced that they have successfully trialled 25G PON technology, making them the first to demonstrate symmetric speeds of 20 Gbps in Latvia. The lab trial showed that the state-of-the-art 25G PON can seamlessly co-exist with Tet’s existing GPON and XGS-PON solutions, enabling a smooth and cost-effective migration to higher speeds and capacities for businesses and private clients.

As one of Latvia's leading Internet Service Providers (ISP), Tet has been investing in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure to provide ultra-fast and reliable broadband services to customers. Tet’s fiber network is one of the most expansive in Latvia, capable of delivering multi-gigabit, Wi-Fi 7, and cloud-based services. Tet internet is provided for more than half a million addresses in Latvia and by September of this year, 5000 more homes were connected to the Tet internet network.

The recently tested 25G PON technology enables symmetrical bandwidth capacities that can support evolving use cases and the heightened bandwidth needs of both residential and commercial customers. The solution offered by Nokia with the Quillion chipset is one of the most advanced in the world. This 25G PON trial reinforces Tet’s readiness to support increasing bandwidth demands from next-generation applications like cloud gaming, virtual reality, and the metaverse.

Uldis Tatarčuks, CEO of Tet, commented: “Today we see a growing demand for secure and stable data transmission connections. Obviously, data transmission in optical networks is the most powerful, stable, and environmentally friendly solution. The volume of data will continue to grow in the upcoming years, so we are pleased that we, in collaboration with our long-term technology partner Nokia, have successfully completed the first technology tests in Latvia. The introduction of real technological innovations in our range of services is the basis for our development, and we are sure that the demand for 25G PON technology will be high.”

Marika Mentula, Vice President for Network Infrastructure North Europe at Nokia, said: “Our collaboration is a great step forward in bringing ultra-fast broadband to Latvia, leveraging Nokia’s advanced PON technologies. With our 25G PON solution, built on our Quillion chipset and Lightspan access nodes, we are helping operators like Tet strengthen their fiber networks. This enables them to deliver high-performance services with greater speed, efficiency, and scalability. We look forward to continuing our partnership to bring the benefits of 25G PON to Latvia and beyond.”
