RIGA - Reports that telecommunication cables in the Baltic Sea have been cut are extremely worrisome, President Edgars Rinkevics told reporters on Wednesday.

The president stressed that this is a worrisome news and that serious fact-checking is currently under way, which is why he would refrain from further comments on the incident.

The president noted that the National Security Council is scheduled to convene for its regular meeting on Wednesday afternoon, with the disruption of the subsea cables expected to be discussed as well.

The meeting will also hear information on the condition and security of Latvia's critical infrastructure, as well as issues requiring attention, Rinkevics said.

The president added that the National Security Council's meetings always include the monthly reports of the national security services on the security situation in the country.

The National Security Council's meetings are held behind closed doors and the content of the discussions are a state secret.

As reported, two subsea internet cables - one between Lithuania and Sweden and one between Finland and Germany - have been damaged in the Baltic Sea.

Swedish authorities are investigating the cable disruption as possible sabotage, the prosecutor's office said Tuesday.

The cable linking Lithuania with Sweden was damaged on Sunday morning, Swedish telecommunications company Telia informed.

The company's representative indicated that the cable was damaged close to the site where the only C-Lion1 subsea telecommunications between Germany and Finland was damaged.

On Tuesday, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said he was convinced that the damage to the telecommunication cables in the Baltic Sea connecting Lithuania and Sweden, as well as Germany and Finland, was most likely sabotage.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Lithuanian Prosecutor General Nida Grunskiene has opened a terrorism investigation in connection with the incident.
