VILNIUS - The results of a tender to select a contractor for the biological sewage treatment facilities in Kaunas are expected in early January, privatization officials said.

There are more than 10 bidders taking part in the tender, including international consortiums established by Lithuanian companies with partners from Germany, Scandinavia and other countries.
The construction of the Kaunas sewage treatment plant, the largest of its kind in the country, is estimated at about 19 million euros. About 14 million euros will come from the EU's ISPA program, with the rest to be allocated from the state budget.
A tender will also be held for the expansion of the water supply and sewage systems in and around Kaunas. "On Oct. 27 we signed an agreement with the German consultancy Fichter" on the tender, Vilius Burokas, CEO of the water utility Kauno Vandenys, said.
The project is estimated at more than 12 million euros. Nearly 9 million euros have been allocated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
