100 largest banks in Eastern Europe

TALLINN - The recent issue of "The Banker" magazine has ranked the 100 largest banks in Eastern and Central Europe.

The top 100 includes two banks from Estonia, two banks from Latvia and four banks from Lithuania.
Hansabank was 16th, Vilniaus Bankas 43rd, Uhispank 45th, Parex Bank 47th, Unibanka 58th, Bankas Snoras 78th, Lietuvos Zemes Ukio Bank 95th and Pirma 98th.
Of the rest, 22 are Polish, 15 Hungarian, nine each from Croatia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, eight from Romania, seven each from Slovenia and Bulgaria, four each from Lithuania and Serbia and Montenegro and two from Macedonia.
Total capital of the top 10 banks amounted to $24.34 billion at the end of 2002. Polish banks constituted 38 percent of this amount, Czech banks - 16 percent and Hungarian - 13 percent.
In comparison to 2001 the total capital of the 100 largest Central European banks has grown by 23.8 percent, and assets ($299.4 billion at the end of 2002) - by 21.1 percent.
