New Europe, old Europe

When Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld reprimanded the leaders of France and Germany earlier this year with his remarks about "old" Europe giving way to "new" Europe, he was attempting to dislodge the historic privilege of the founders of the European Union. His "new" Europe would, of course, be better friends of the United States. The emerging democracies of Eastern Europe including the Baltic states, which were soon to be members of NATO, were included in this group. His comments were used to score political points.
