RIGA - A toll-free hotline financed by scant funds from the Interior Ministry was opened in Latvia on Feb. 14 for police to accept anonymous reports about drug dealing in schools.

The opening ceremony was attended by Latvian Interior Minister Mareks Seglins and top police officers, who hope the innovation will help curb drug dealing among youngsters.

Seglins called on people not to use the hotline for jokes and silly calls. The hotline was put into operation at 1 p.m. Its number is 8000025.

The number will be sent to all schools and educational establishments.

The police said the general population was welcome to use the hotline to report drug dealing in schools, night clubs and other places where youngsters gather in large numbers. The police also guarantees that informers will remain anonymous.
