Netherlands score six past Latvia in crucial Euro 2016 qualifier

Latvia suffered a crushing defeat in a Euro 2016 qualifier in Amsterdam on Sunday, losing 6-0 against to the Netherlands.

Arjen Robben and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored two goals each for the Dutch team whilst Robin van Persie and Jeffrey Bruma had one goal apiece.

The Dutch team controlled the game all the time, had far more opportunities and shots on goal, and were clearly the better team last night.

Latvia is currently ranked 99th in FIFA World Ranking, whereas Netherlands is in fifth place.

Elsewhere, the Czech Republic defeated Iceland 2-1 and Turkey beat Kazakhstan 3-1.

The Czech Republic is in first place in Group A with 12 points, followed by Iceland with nine points, Netherlands in third place with six points. Turkey has four points, Latvia two and Kazakhstan closes the group with one point.

Latvia's next game will be against the Czech Republic in March 2015.

The top two teams in each of the eight qualification groups will automatically qualify for EURO 2016, while the third place finishes will play in a special play-off stage for the final four spots in the tournament.
