Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has thanked Latvia for the speedy ratification of the EU Association Agreement.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics met with Poroshenko on June 15 to ratify the agreement that facilitates a free trade deal and visa free movement for the Ukraine.

"These are critical and important days in Ukraine's history, and at this exact moment, we highly evaluate the support and solidarity that comes from our friends in Europe," Poroshenko said.

The foreign minister, who met Poroshenko alongside his Icelandic and Polish counterparts, backed Ukraine's plans to bring peace and stability to the eastern region of Ukraine, LETA reports.

Rinkevics is on a working visit to Ukraine until July 17. Today he plans to hold several meetings in Kiev, where he will meet with representatives from the European Defense and Security Organization and the Ukrainian president's administration.

"Ukraine's struggle for the future and independence of the country is our fight as well," said Mr Rinkevics.

"In this challenging hour, we are together as one with the Ukrainian people."

The Latvian government ratified the association agreement with the Ukraine at an emergency meeting on July 14.
