Over 100 police bribes recorded last year

A total of 116 instances of bribes offered to police officers were registered last year, Latvian State Police say.

In 2013, 11 bribe taking incidents within the police force were recorded, with eight criminal processes started. In 2012, eight bribe taking incidents within the police force was recorded, but in 2011 - 16 cases.

A majority of the bribe takers were Highway Police officers. Furthermore, there were 116 instances of bribes offered to police officers last year, reports LETA.

In 2012, there were 85 instances of bribes offered to police officers, but in 2011, 49 instances.

State Police say they have placed a heightened emphasis on the matter of bribe giving and taking in recent years, thus the increase in the number of bribery instances.
