Snow has finally settled in parts of Latvia and the rest of the Baltics, with one village experiencing 12 centimeters of snow cover in one night.
Villagers in Rucava woke up to the white blanket on Jan, 13. Elsewhere, Liepaja has had 8 centimeters, Ventspils and Stende - 1 centimeter, Aluksne - 6 centimeters, Priekuli and Zoseni - 2 centimeters, Daugavpils - 1 centimeter, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center says.
The lowest temperature was registered in Rujiena at minus 7.8 degrees celsius. Temperatures also fell to minus 7.4 degrees in Aluksne and minus 6.7 degrees in Priekuli and Zosen. minus
The temperature in Riga was at minus 2.8 degrees.
Ice and snow have also create difficult driving conditions on highways and regional roads in Kurzeme and Latgale, road maintenance company Latvijas Valsts celi has said.
In Kurzeme, driving is hampered on Riga-Skulte-Liepaja, Riga-Ventspils, Liepaja-Rucava, Talsi-Stende-Kuldiga and Ligas-Kandava-Vegi sections.
In Latgale, driving is difficult on Jekabpils-Rezekne-Ludza-Terehova, Rezekne-Gulbene, Plavinas-Gulbene sections, as well as the Rezekne bypass.
Driving conditions are also difficult on regional roads in the vicinity of Riga, Bauska, Dobele, Gulbene, Jekabpils, Kraslava, Kuldiga, Liepaja, Limbazi, Madona, Ogre, Preili, Rezekne, Saldus, Talsi, Tukums and Ventspils.
