Riga council passes budget with deficit

 A majority of Riga council members passed the municipality's budget for 2014 on Dec.17 , setting a 4.3% or 31.5 million euro deficit.

The total income for Riga next year has been planned at 731 million euros and expenditures at 763 million euros.

Council leaders said the municipality's current priorities will remain - education, security, social aid, upgrading infrastructure.

A more specific priority - guaranteeing that all planned events go on as scheduled pertaining to the coveted title the city will hold as the European Capital of Culture.

A total of 11 percent of basic budget expenditures will be allocated for social protection -83.4 million euros. A total of 24.3 million euros is to be channeled for social benefits and 10.4 million euros - for social services.
