Seimas speaker signs controversial land bill

Lithuania’s Speaker of the Seimas Loreta Grauziniene supported the referendum against land sales to foreigners and confessed that she signed the document to prevent foreigners from buying land, reports ELTA.

“From the perspective of the civilians, it is very good because. As a result, my signature is in those papers. I support the idea that we have to treasure our land and that we have to careful, while welcoming the legal acts,” said Grauziniene while giving an interview on radio Ziniu Radijas on Dec. 18.

Even if Grauziniene confessed that the agreement of Lithuania’s membership in the EU did not provide for any proviso for Lithuania, the speaker of the Seimas said that she saw the opportunity for negotiation.

“If we are speaking honestly, the agreement of membership did not provide any proviso any more. All the provisos are exhausted. But if Lithuania’s people, by the referendum, show that they have the different opinion (..), the government will be forced to negotiate with all 28 EU member states and ask to rewrite the agreement,” said Grauziniene.
