Thirty five members of Riga City Council's coalition parties, Harmony Center and Honor to Serve Riga backed Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs during a vote of no confidence against him on Dec. 4.
Usakovs himself abstained whilst no opposition members participated in the vote, noting that they wanted "no part in this farce" where councilmen vote as told by their leaders.
Addressing the meeting, Usakovs and Vice Mayor Andris Ameriks said they felt that they could not resign as this could impede the city council's work and investigation of the Zolitude tragedy. They also criticized opposition members for not attending the meeting and for being generally "of no use" to the Riga City Council and Riga residents alike.
