An unexpected collapse of a third section of the Maxima supermarket occurred around 6pm on Nov. 23 as Latvia is observing a national day of mourning. None of the rescuers at the scene were hurt, reports LETA
Fifty-four people are now confirmed dead with dozens more injured after a shopping center roof collapsed in Riga on Thursday evening, Nov. 21.
Emergency services were called to the Zolitudes Maxima shopping center at around 18:00 after the roof of the building collapsed onto shoppers below.
Police say a winter garden was being constructed on the roof and may have been the cause of the collapse, although investigations are ongoing.
