Latvians worldwide prepare for independence day

Latvian communities around the world will be organizing special events for independence day on Nov. 18, reports LETA.

They will be celebrating the 95th anniversary of the proclamation of the independent Republic of Latvia.

Special events and concerts are planned in various cities throughout Canada, the United States, Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Lithuania, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Estonia, Ireland, Russia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Finland, Spain and even Singapore.

The events will be organized by the local Latvian embassies and Latvian communities.

The People's Council of Latvia proclaimed Latvia independece in Riga on November 18, 1918, at the Latvian National Theater building.

Meanhwhile, United Nations General Secretary, Ban Ki-Moon will  a be visiting Latvia on Nov.14-15 to take part in an independence day conference.

Latvian president Andirs Berzins will open the conference.
