Belarus breaks ground for nuclear plant

The construction of Belarus’ Astravas nuclear power plant (NPP), only 50 kilometers away from Vilnius, started on Nov. 5, reports belta.by

Belarus is getting down to the main phase of the nuclear power plant construction. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed the relevant decree No. 499 on Nov. 2, enabling its start.

In accordance with Article 4 of the law on using nuclear energy the president had to decide on building a nuclear power plant or other power-generating unit. Belarus has already completed preparations required to begin the nuclear power plant construction, including within the framework of international commitments.

The infrastructure required to build the nuclear power plant has already been created near the construction site.
