The head of Latvia’s National Culture Center has been officially named as the country’s new culture minister, reports LETA.

Dace Melbarde replaces ex-culture minister Zaneta Jaunzeme-Grende, after she was forced to resign earlier this year over a scandal involving the National Opera.

Melbarde is known for leading the Latvian Nationwide Song and Dance Festival and the School Youth Song and Dance Festival. She is also secretary general of the UNESCO Latvian National Commission.
