RIGA - Latvian tennis star Ernests Gulbis has won the ATP final at the St. Petersburg open. Twenty five-year-old Gulbis came back to beat Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a fierce match on Sunday, Sept. 21. Despite going down in the first set and trailing 4-1 in the second, the Jurmala-based tennis player went on to win the third set without losing a game.
The win has lifted the player into the top thirty ranked best players in the world and is his fourth title of his career.
“I’ve been very consistent especially in finals; I’ve never lost in a final. I’m proud of that record,” said Gulbis.
He added: “The main key why I’m not yet a top player is consistency. Everybody knows I can play well for a tournament or a match, and then I go downhill. I just need to bring this consistency to bigger tournaments, especially Grand Slams. Then I believe I am a Top 20 player for sure, and not so far from Top 10.”
