RIGA - Estonian businessman Hugo Osula’s bus company Lux Express will transport passengers for free on the Riga-Liepaja route for a month as a form of protest against Latvian regulations, reports LETA. Manager of Lux Express Hannes Saarpuu claims that Latvian regulations don’t facilitate a high-quality and modern transport of passengers. Saarpuu explained that the main difference with Estonia is that in Latvia, the state has in essence monopolized local passenger transport and not just regarding county routes, but also intercity routes.

“The existing rules that prescribe that the passenger transport market is a closed one and the government constantly subsidizes transport companies, are irresponsible and can only work in short-term perspective. Due to lack of competition in passenger transport, people are deprived of modern and high-quality services,” Saarpuu said.
