RIGA - One of 68 persons accused of taking part in the Jan. 13, 2009 ‘riot’ in Old Town Riga, Arturs Sternbergs, was sentenced on Aug. 13 in Riga Regional Court, receiving 100 hours of community service, reports LETA. The hooligan is the very first of the 68 to be sentenced. Neither he nor his counsel were present in the courtroom.

The judge read the short version of the verdict; the lengthy one, with detailed motivation, will become available Aug. 27. Prosecutor Liga Sudakova had requested a suspended jail sentence and three year police probation.
She told the court that Sternbergs had been an “active rioter,” throwing rocks, breaking windows and trying to overturn a mini-van.
