Ash heap fire continues

TALLINN - The first signs that the inside of the Kohtla-Jarve semi-coke hill was on fire were evident last winter, but it was only this spring that the first crater emerged on the Baltic State’s largest ash heap. There are now two sources of the fires, reports Postimees.There is no universally known solution to extinguish such a fire. The 186 meter high hill, which holds 100 million cubic meters of spent oil shale, is burning from the inside, and manifests itself in the form of a couple of openings that emit a sulphur smell and smoke.
