Berzins elected Honorary Fellow of the University of Latvia

RIGA - President Andris Berzins has been elected Honorary Fellow of the University of Latvia, LETA was informed by the university's press center.

In respect and recognition for Berzins' considerable merits in service for Latvia and support for the country's higher education and science, the University of Latvia Senate has decided to elect the president a Fellow of the University of Latvia.

The decision was made during the May 28 session of the University of Latvia Senate, after listening to a report by the university's rector Marcis Auzans and voting for the motion.

Berzins will be officially awarded University of Latvia honorary diploma on September 29.

There are currently 45 people on the university's list of honorary fellows, including former presidents Gustavs Zemgals, Alberts Kviesis, Guntis Ulmanis, Valdis Zatlers (Reform Party), former prime minister Karlis Ulmanis, Supreme Council chairman Anatolijs Gorbunovs, Council of Ministers chairman Ivars Godmanis, Ventspils Mayor Aivars Lembergs, as well as other Latvian and foreign culture, science business representatives.
