RIGA - As of today [April 2], electronic identity cards (eID) are issued in Latvia at the branches of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

Unlike a passport, an eID enables user identity verification on the Internet as well as use of the opportunities offered by the electronic signature, the Citizenship and Migration Affairs Office's public relations officer Andrejs Rjabcovs told LETA.

The fee for taking out an eID is 10 lats (14.23 euros), whereas the fee for youths, pensioners and disabled is 5 lats.
