RIGA - Today's agreed upon compromise between European Union foreign ministers on economic sanctions against Belarus is in accordance with Latvia's interests, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (pictured) told LETA.

“These sanctions, especially after last week's executions in Belarus, were unavoidable,” the foreign minister said.

On the other hand, the Foreign Ministry's press and information department informed LETA that in today's discussions on the Belarus sanctions, Rinkevics expressed support towards the EU compromises, as they are proportionate and effective restrictions measures. This agreement is in accordance with Latvia's position, because it sends a serious signal to the Belarus regime, whilst at the same time leaving limited negative influence on EU economies and the welfare of the people of Belarus.

“This decision was not an easy one for Latvia, however, it supported the compromise, because it believes a unified EU foreign policy is very important,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
