PANEVEZYS - Latvia and Lithuania have identical positions in regard to the European Union's (EU) proposed sanctions against Belarus, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite told members of the press on March 22 after meeting with Latvian President Andris Berzins.

“We are neighbors, and we have the same concerns,” the Lithuanian President said.

She believes that sanctions against the current regime in Belarus is necessary, however, these sanctions “cannot affect the country’s people.” Grybauskaite expressed hope that an EU agreement on sanctions will be made tomorrow.

For his part, Berzins pointed out that Brussels' proposed sanctions could not only lead to economic losses for Latvia, but affect the Latvian people as well.

“Nothing lasts forever. I hope that the current EU activities will be a positive influence for change in Belarus,” Berzins said.
