RIGA - As March 16, WWII Latvian Legion Day, approaches more and more assemblies are being registered in Riga to oppose the commemorative event.

The Riga City Council for instance has received an application from an organization called "Autonomous Activity" for an "anti-fascist" march from Riflemen Square to the Freedom Monument with about 200 planned participants.

At this time, a total of seven groups are registered so far who will honor the legionnaires - including the "Daugavas vanagi," its Limbazi regional branch, and the extreme right "perkonkrustiesi." They have a procession planned to the Freedom Monument.

Security Police ranks have already announced that they will be on high alert March 16.
