Latvia to issue electronic ID cards

RIGA - The Latvian government has announced that it will begin to issue electronic identity cards from April 1, LETA reports.On Feb 21 the government approved a new measure on regulations on identity documents, which provide a new procedure for the issue of passports and electronic identity documents.The matter was hotly debated at the government meeting today because the new IDs could not be used in elections, referendums or signature drives. The electronic register of voters has not yet been developed, but is expected to be in place by the local government elections in 2013....
