Lithuania celebrates Restoration of Independence

VILNIUS – Today, Lithuania marks the 94th anniversary of the Lithuanian Restoration of Independence. This day is a national holiday in the country.

The state will hold various events dedicated to the restoration of the Independence Day: in the Historical Presidential Palace in Kaunas a campaign "Let Us Greet Each Other" will take place today, 400 square meters large Lithuanian flag will be flown on kites in Nemunas Island in Kaunas, writes LETA.

In Vilnius, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite will present awards to Lithuania’s and foreign citizens for merits.

In Prienai town, local residents will weave a national panel. Siauliai city will create special postcards to commemorate the Day of Independence, actors of Siauliai Drama Theater will greet public transport users by reading poetry of Jonas Kriksciunas-Jovaras. Urged by the president, Lithuanian composers also launch a new Feb. 16 tradition, who plan to annually compose a new piece of music to mark the event.

The celebrations will be crowned by a concert at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic; the income will be forwarded to support young musicians.

A campaign entitled "Be a part of Lithuania" will be implemented in 15 Lithuanian cities, during which people will take balloons in their hands and gather in a definite place and manner to form a word "Lithuania." The balloons will be green, red, and yellow - just like the colors of Lithuanian flag. To conclude the event, participants of the campaign will sing national anthem.
