Masiulis: Lithuania hastened with signing ACTA

VILNIUS - Minister of Transport and Communications Eligijus Masiulis thinks that Lithuania hastened with signing the ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement).

Masiulis is going to initiate a discussion during the government's meeting and ask the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was in charge of signing the agreement, to explain whether people's doubts that after signing this agreement Lithuania will restrict the Internet freedom are reasoned. Another concern is what Lithuania is going to do, as some other EU countries have announced stopping the ratification of the agreement in their parliaments.

"If those countries which have signed the agreement are changing their position, it seems that the majority of countries have not understood what they have signed or what the consequences of the agreement might be. Lithuania might have also hastened to sign the agreement without discussing it publicly," said Masiulis in the press release. Masiulis said that the protest campaigns that took place in Vilnius this weekend shows that there are too many unanswered questions and doubts whether the agreement will be beneficial for Lithuania and its residents.
