Vilks rejects further austerity

RIGA - The previously-carried out state budget consolidation was too large and additional austerity measures are currently impossible, Finance Minister Andris Vilks (Unity) said in an interview with the newspaper Dienas Bizness. “It would be wrong to send a signal that Latvia, just like a year ago, should carry out an additional 50 million lats’ (71.4 million euros) consolidation this spring,” said the minister.Vilks said that he would gladly come up with a non-deficit budget within a year.
