RIGA - The Constitutional Court decided today to accept and review a petition submitted by a group of Saeima members, contesting the state language referendum due Feb. 18, however, the Constitutional Court did not order the preparations for the referendum halted, reports LETA.
The decision to open a case was made by a panel of the Constitutional Court judges, which included Aija Branta, Uldis Kinis and Kristine Kruma.
As reported, the Constitutional Court was submitted the petition on Jan.12.
The referendum on granting the status of a state language to Russian is scheduled to be held on Feb. 18. A total of 771,893 votes will be required to make Russian a second official language.
