VAT rate on newspapers in Lithuania to remain unchanged

VILNIUS - Algirdas Butkevicius from the Social Democratic Party Parliamentary Group said he was disappointed that the Lithuanian Seimas’ Budget and Finance Committee rejected the proposal to reduce the VAT tax rate on newspapers.

President Dalia Grybauskaite proposed the amendments for a law on the VAT tax, which would introduce the VAT of 9% on periodical press. Usual VAT rate is 21%, informs LETA/ELTA.

Since 2009, after the VAT rate on periodical press was increased up to 21%, the circulation of magazines and newspapers, especially regional ones, has decreased. On Thursday, the ruling coalition signed the agreement which states that the reduced VAT on medicaments, book publishing and heat will remain unchanged in 2012.
