Ergma met with President of European Parliament

TALLINN- On Nov. 21, the President of the Riigikogu Ene Ergmamet with the President of the European ParliamentJerzy Buzek who currently is on aworking visit in Estonia. The situation in the eurozone, regional joint action, the Eastern Partnership, cooperation with Russia and other topical issues of the European Union were discussed.

Ergma stressed that leaderships and citizens need to behave more responsibly during the current crisis. In Ergma’s words, the main task is to stop the eurozone debt crisis and to restore confidence in financial markets.

In his turn, Buzek congratulated Estonia on the accession to the eurozone and he appreciated it as a particularly important and necessary signal for the whole union in current time. The President of the European Parliament recognized Estonia’s efforts in keeping the state budget under control and the high awareness of citizens in their attitude towards the inevitability of the cuts. He also touched upon the economic situation in the whole European Union at large, stating that operative solutions are needed in the financial and economic sector in countries that are in crisis. He pointed out that, in addition to quick solutions, the EU must act decisively also in a longer perspective in order to continuously remain at the forefront of the global economy and democracy.
